Car buyers know it’s important to test-drive a car. While most individuals feel sure they know how to go ahead with the activity, a few important pointers can help them to identify potential issues and problems which they might otherwise overlook.

Decide your vehicle first

Decide your car

Do your homework before wandering into the car lot for available cars. Think about which makes and models satisfy your commuting requirements to the most. Study a car buyer’s guide and check the internet for models which prove to be of interest to you.

Check the specifications –

  • Engine size,
  • Torque,
  • Power,
  • Payload capacity,
  • Drive chain, etc.

Think in terms of fulfilling your basic requirements and added mileage rather than raw towing power and electronic gadgetry offered by the particular model. Short list two or three models which can do the “job” for you. Once you visit, pick out the selected models and test-drive them. Evaluate the models on the same day to avail a much better idea regarding their comparisons.

If possible, take a friend along to keep the sales person occupied while you test-drive the models. Your friend can also point out things which you might otherwise overlook. Request the salesperson to take the vehicle home overnight so you can ascertain whether it fits your garage, how well the headlights function, and whether the interiors are properly illuminated.

Take your time to inspect the vehicle

Things to in a Inspect Car

At the car dealership, inform the salesperson you plan to compare the models and their prices at other showrooms too. This will discourage the person in quoting a high price for your car. Take your time in inspecting the car from outside and from within.

  • Check how the power train functions and feels.
  • Look for the vehicle features which might trouble you later on when you start using the car – a trunk that is difficult to open,
  • Broken or missing cup holders,
  • Cracked or opaque window glass,
  • Door handles that don’t function properly, etc.

Check if the safety features such as air bags, seat belts, and safety devices are functioning properly. Open the hood and inspect the interiors for the engine parts and components if they are genuine and of standard make.

  • Once you are behind the wheel, the first thing is to check the dashboard and see how the primary controls look and function.
  • Check the clutch and brake pedal for play and effectiveness.
  • If the car has an adjustable steering wheel, can you adjust its correct distance that makes you feel comfortable?
  • Do the electronic features work properly?
  • If the vehicle has a climate control facility, does it work in the correct manner?
  • Do the Wi-Fi and stereo system function as per your needs?
  • How well does the car handle?
  • Most important of all – does the car offer a drive as per your expectations?
  • Check the vehicle in totality before deciding upon it.

It’s a good idea to prepare yourself for the test drive before plunging straight ahead into the activity.
