Two super cars, two radically different launch styles and one commonality: a massive fan frenzy! Early this week, two sports car models, Acura NSX and Ford GT gave glorious appearances in the automobile market driving the long-dull world of high-end vehicles into a new spirit of regal exuberance.
Acura NSX was revealed in the market as a super sports car under construction back in 2012, and since then the car has been in news with fans waiting patiently for the ready model to make in appearance. On the contrary, Ford GT came with a bang, launching barely a few hundred meters away from the NSX launch site and in just about a two hours’ difference in time. Even with different ways of launch and a clearly expected difference in price tags, both these cars attracted nearly the same big bites of footage from media and automobile enthusiasts. Mark Fields, the CEO of Ford, has confessed to having created a ‘secret’ underground facility to get the car ready without coming into the notice of anyone!
There is considerable difference between the prices of these cars; while the Acura NSX holds the tag of $150,000, Ford GT will cost in the upwards of $200,000. Will these cars usher rocket high sales; probably not; “The business case is never why you do a vehicle like this”, says Bill Ford, Executive Chairman Ford.
While sales numbers are expected to remain in the range of a few hundreds for Ford GT and about 2000 for NSX per year, the cars would serve an entirely different purpose for the companies making them. In essence, both these elite vehicles purport to enhance the brands they belong to and cause a stir in the market. More specifically, GT is the flagship model for an entire Ford Performance division that has a goal of building 12 new models of cars by 2020; hence, with GT, the company is creating a fan base for its performance-oriented models. Meanwhile, Mike Accavitti of Acura says NSX is a means of etching a premium brand value on Acura.
Being a gasoline-only car could have been a significant disadvantage at any time but now when gasoline prices are witnessing happy lows. Luckily, Ford GT has bagged this amazing advantage in its stride!
A difference to note between Acura NSX and Ford GT is, that besides the same inaugural dates, these two cars are going to come into production nearly a whole year apart; while NSX will start production towards the end of 2015, GT won’t let the fans have a drive until about the second half of 2016.
Till then, let’s fold our hands together and watch the giants’ dance!
